7 Signs Your LinkedIn Headshot Is Overdue (And What to Do About It)
Your LinkedIn photo is the first thing a recruiter or future client sees — and they've formed an impression before reading a single word. Most professionals are walking around with a photo quietly working against them. Here are the seven signs I see most in my studio.
1. You don't look like your photo anymore. New haircut, glasses, beard, a few years — all fine. But if someone couldn't pick you out from your photo, it chips away at trust before you've said a word.
2. It's been more than two years. Photography styles date like resume formats. Refresh every two to three years as maintenance — not in a panic when you're job hunting.
3. You're hiding behind a cropped group photo. Everyone can tell. And it says "I didn't think this was worth doing properly" — costly on a credibility platform.
4. The quality doesn't match your peers. Grainy and dim next to crisp professional images reads as low attention to detail. LinkedIn's small circle crop makes bad originals worse.
5. Your role outgrew your photo. That casual headshot was perfect as an individual contributor; now you're leading teams or running a business and the photo still says "junior."
6. The background is doing too much. Beach sunsets, clutter, car interiors — your photo has one job: make people focus on you.
7. People don't recognize you at events. If your photo is misleading enough that humans can't find you in a room, it's actively working against your networking.
What does it cost? Profiles with photos get dramatically more views, and most recruiters say an outdated photo creates a negative impression. It's not vanity — it's congruence. People trust what feels true.
The good news: fixing it takes 30 minutes. A focused session is short, guided, with hair and makeup handled. I run monthly headshot event days — last Saturday and Sunday of each month at my North Tustin studio — a streamlined session at a friendly price, gallery delivered in 48 hours.
