When to Schedule Your Maternity Photos (Don't Miss the Window)

Every year, I get the same heartbreaking call: "I'm 38 weeks — is it too late?" Sometimes we make it work. Sometimes the baby has other plans. So let's settle this once and for all.

The sweet spot for maternity photos is 28 to 34 weeks. Here's why that window works: your bump is round, high, and unmistakably pregnant — not the "did she have a big lunch?" phase of the mid-twenties. You're still mobile and comfortable enough to pose, change outfits, and genuinely enjoy yourself. And you're ahead of the late-pregnancy gauntlet: swelling, exhaustion, backaches — and the very real chance your baby arrives early.

A few refinements, because every pregnancy is different. First pregnancy? Aim for 32 to 35 weeks — you tend to show later the first time. Second or third? Shift earlier, 30 to 33 weeks — you show sooner and tire sooner. Twins or multiples? Don't wait: 28 to 32 weeks, since multiples often arrive early. High-risk pregnancy? Talk to your doctor, and plan for the earlier side of the window.

Too early — before 28 weeks — and the bump often doesn't read as pregnancy on camera. Too late — past 36 — and sessions become about endurance rather than joy. Possible, but not the experience you want to remember.
