Including Your Partner, Kids — Even the Dog — in Your Maternity Photos
"Can my husband come? What about my toddler? And our dog?" Yes, yes, and yes — with a little planning, the family portion of your maternity session produces the images you'll treasure most. Here's how to do it beautifully, without a single cheesy pose.
Your partner: keep it natural, not staged. The best partner shots are simple and physical — his hand resting on your bump, a forehead kiss, the two of you laughing at something only you find funny. No forced gazing into each other's eyes while I count to three. I direct gently and then get out of the way, because genuine connection photographs better than any pose I could invent. Tell him to wear a dark, simple shirt — solid navy, charcoal, or black — and he'll look great without thinking about it.
Your kids: let them be kids. The magic shots are unposed — a toddler kissing your belly, a big sister whispering secrets to the baby, small hands spread across the bump. Don't rehearse them; children smell a performance instantly. Two practical rules: do the family portion first, while energy and patience are high, and bring snacks and a favorite toy. Fifteen to twenty minutes of family time is plenty — then they can relax while we create your solo portraits.
Your dog: absolutely, with one heads-up. Dogs photograph wonderfully — loyal, soulful, leaning against your bump. Mention it when you book so we plan for it: pups do best at the start of the session, before the studio's calm sets in and they decide the seamless paper is a napkin. A quick walk beforehand helps enormously.
Wardrobe coordination: think harmony, not matching. Everyone in complementary neutrals — creams, soft grays, muted earth tones — photographs as a family without looking like a uniform. Avoid everyone in stark white (it blows out) and skip busy patterns that fight the bump for attention.
The family images anchor the gallery: this is the last portrait of your family before it changes forever. Then the session becomes yours — the solo portraits, the glam, the quiet celebration of what your body is doing.
