Getting ready for your portrait session is exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking if you’re not sure what to expect. That’s why I’ve put together some simple tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and ready to shine in front of the camera. Whether this is your first portrait session or you’ve done it before, these steps will ensure that you have the best possible experience.
1. Choose the Right Outfits
Your outfit plays a big role in how you feel and look in your portraits. Select clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Solid colors often work best, as they don’t distract from your face, but feel free to incorporate textures and layers for added depth. Avoid busy patterns or logos, as they can detract from the overall look. If you’re not sure what to wear, I can help you decide during our pre-session consultation.
2. Bring a Few Outfit Options
It’s always a good idea to bring a couple of outfit changes so we can capture a variety of looks. Depending on the session, I might suggest different styles—whether it’s casual, professional, or something in between. For example, a headshot session might require one professional look, while a family portrait could be more casual and fun.
3. Relax and Trust the Process
One of the most important things to remember is that you don’t need to be a model to look great in your portraits. My job as your photographer is to guide you through the session, help you pose naturally, and make sure your personality shines through. Trust that I’ll coach you through each step, from your facial expressions to your posture, so you feel relaxed and confident.
4. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
A well-rested body and mind make a big difference in how you feel during your session. The night before your shoot, be sure to get plenty of rest so you feel refreshed and ready to go. Hydrating and eating a healthy breakfast will also keep your energy levels high throughout the day.
5. What to Bring
In addition to your wardrobe, it’s helpful to bring any personal items that are meaningful to you. Whether it’s a favorite accessory or a piece of jewelry, these details can add a personal touch to your portraits. If you’re bringing children or pets, don’t forget to pack a few snacks, water, and anything that helps them stay comfortable and engaged.
