Headshots vs. Branding Photos: Which One Do You Actually Need?
This is the question I hear most on consultation calls — usually from someone who knows they need something professional but can't tell whether to book a headshot or a branding session. They're not interchangeable.
A headshot is a single polished portrait: head and shoulders, clean background, direct gaze. Its job is identification and credibility — it answers "who is this person?" You use it for LinkedIn, your company bio, speaker lineups, press mentions. Twenty to forty-five minutes, one or two outfits, a handful of finished images. For most professionals, it's enough.
A branding session is a different animal. Where a headshot says who you are, branding photos say who you are, what you do, and what it feels like to work with you. You get a library of 30–80+ images: you at your desk, mid-conversation, in motion, detail shots of your workspace. These fill your website, Instagram, newsletters, and course thumbnails. It takes half a day and delivers content you use for months.
The 30-Second Quiz
Book a headshot if you need one strong image for LinkedIn or a directory, you're updating a speaker bio, you've been promoted, or you're job searching.
Book a branding session if you're launching or rebranding, you're the face of your company and your site still has stock photos, you post on social media regularly, or you're a coach, founder, realtor, or speaker whose clients buy you.
Founder who also needs LinkedIn? Get both — most branding sessions include fresh headshots in the gallery. One booking, both boxes checked.
Why Orange County Professionals End Up Getting Both
Here's the pattern I see constantly: a client books a headshot, loves it, then launches a website or starts posting more — and comes back for branding. If you're already thinking beyond LinkedIn, consider the branding session first. But if your company handles the marketing and you just need to look sharp on your own profiles, a headshot is the right call. Don't buy a library you'll never open.
