Headshot vs. Modern Headshot: What's the Actual Difference?
Clients ask me this all the time: "What's the difference between a headshot and a modern headshot? Isn't a headshot a headshot?"
Fair question. They share a camera, but they're built for different jobs.
The traditional headshot is the one you know: head and shoulders, plain or blurred background, direct gaze, polite smile. Its job is identification. It answers one question: what does this person look like? It's the photo for the company directory, the ID badge, the org chart. Efficient, neutral, forgettable — and for those uses, forgettable is fine.
The modern headshot starts where the traditional one stops. Same flawless quality, but everything around it is deliberate. The wardrobe is chosen, not defaulted to. The background has character. The expression isn't "say cheese" — it's directed, take after take, until we land the version of you that says exactly what your business needs: credibility, warmth, authority, approachability — sometimes all four in one frame.
The simplest way to think about it: a traditional headshot says "Here I am." A modern headshot says "Here's why you should trust me."
The traditional headshot was designed for directories. The modern headshot is designed for the feed — LinkedIn, your website hero section, speaker lineups, press features, the Google results page where a potential client compares you with three competitors in seven seconds. In that arena, neutral loses. Intentional wins.
So which do you need? If your company just needs a consistent photo for the team page, the traditional headshot does the job. But if clients choose you — founder, realtor, coach, consultant, attorney, executive, anyone whose face is part of the sale — you need the modern version. Your photo isn't decoration; it's doing business development while you sleep.
