Ever wonder what happens behind the camera during a portrait session? As a professional photographer, my work involves much more than just pressing the shutter button. Every portrait session is a carefully crafted experience designed to make my clients feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful. Today, I’m giving you an inside look at what goes on behind the scenes to create those stunning final images.
Before the Session: Planning and Preparation
Long before the actual photoshoot, I start by getting to know my clients. During our initial consultation, we’ll talk about your goals for the session—whether it’s a professional headshot, a family portrait, or a boudoir shoot. This is also the time to discuss any specific ideas or themes you have in mind, so I can tailor the session to your vision.
Once we’ve established the concept, I’ll start planning the logistics. This includes choosing the perfect location, setting up the lighting, and selecting any necessary equipment. My goal is to make sure everything is ready to go so that your session runs smoothly from start to finish.
During the Session: Creating a Comfortable Atmosphere
When it’s time for your photoshoot, my top priority is making sure you feel at ease. Many clients feel nervous or self-conscious at first, but I use facial expression coaching and natural posing techniques to help you relax. Throughout the session, I’ll guide you with simple, easy-to-follow instructions, so you don’t have to worry about how to pose or what to do with your hands.
We’ll try out different angles, lighting setups, and expressions to capture a variety of looks. I often play music or chat with clients to help break the ice and create a more laid-back atmosphere. My goal is for you to have fun during the session, and that will show in your photos!
After the Session: Editing and Retouching
Once the session is complete, the real magic happens in post-production. I carefully review all of the images, selecting the best shots to edit. This involves color correction, skin retouching, and making sure every detail is perfect. My editing style is natural and subtle—I want you to look like the best version of yourself, without looking over-edited.
